Description

OVERVIEW:

Supervise all customs-related activities in the assigned division/LOBs to ensure smooth sailing daily customs operations and ensuring that all shipments are cleared quickly and efficiently. This includes compliance with company policies, customs regulations and addressing non-compliance cases.

In addition, dependent on the assigned division/LOBs, the incumbent may also need to work with external vendors (2PL/3PL) and manage contingency workers engaged to meet operational needs.

This role will also ensure that functional strategies are implemented and support the (Senior) Manager, Customs Brokerage in managing the performance and capabilities of the team.



Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations & Compliance

  • Supervise all activities in the assigned division/LOBs. Oversee customs clearance processes for local imports, exports and transits.
  • Monitor quality of daily activities (KPIs and SLAs); introduce interventions to address non-conformance.
  • Review and approve complex customs declarations and non-fiscal obligations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of customs paperwork and filings; including compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and manage relationships with key stakeholders - both internal and external.
  • Identify areas of improvement and provide recommendations; simplify and streamline to accelerate clearance and enhance efficiencies; execute approved changes
  • Keep up-to-date with changes in company policies and local regulations; ensuring compliance. Investigate and address non-compliance; follow up and ensure corrective actions are taken

Insights, Reporting & Others

  • Prepare monthly reports for various stakeholders. 
  • Analyze issues, identify patterns where possible, and give suggestions to resolve these challenges.
  • Verify vendor invoices received and ensure timely submission to Finance for payment processing.
  • Assist with both internal and external audits.
  • Plan work schedules and manage team's performance, identify training needs and motivate the team to achieve the department's objectives.
  • Conduct orientation to new hires and ensure all mandatory trainings are completed within stipulated timeframe.
  • Ensure the team meets training requirements and comply with local standards.


Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

General Experience

  • Minimum 3 to 6 years of experience in customs brokerage or related field.
  • Excellent knowledge of customs regulations. 
  • Excellent command of English language – both written and oral to liaise with external parties and preparing reports.
  • Experience in supervising a team.

Work Location Requirement – APL Logistics:
Employees residing within 25 miles of an APL Logistics Hub Office (AZ, FL, MI, NC, OR) are required to follow a designated Hybrid schedule as described below:  Fully on-site, or fully remote schedules are determined based on role and business needs.
•    Hybrid employees must report to the office 8 days per month, scheduled by their supervisor.
•    Warehouse roles are typically fully on-site.
•    Candidates outside the 25-mile radius may be considered for fully remote roles, depending on business needs.
Remote work requires full compliance with company policies, including workspace standards, timekeeping, and communication protocols. Commuting costs are not reimbursed.  Adherence to this policy is a condition of employment.
